Age-Related Macular Degeneration

What is Age-Related Macular Degeneration?

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a chronic eye disease that gradually worsens over time. It’s the leading cause of permanent vision loss in people over the age of 50.

AMD occurs when the central portion of your retina, your macula, begins to wear down. Your macula is the part of your eye that allows you to see sharp detail – for someone with AMD, sharp vision is hindered.

This disease is known as ‘age-related’ because it tends to develop and gradually worsen as you get older. Although blindness can occur, AMD usually leads to severe vision problems. There is no pain associated with AMD. It can come on suddenly, but in most cases, AMD is a slow progression of declined vision.

AMD Facts:

  • AMD is the leading cause of blindness and severe visual impairment among people 50 years of age or older.
  • AMD can happen in one eye or both eyes.
  • Having late AMD in one eye puts you at greater risk of developing late AMD in the other eye.
  • By 2050, the number of people with AMD is expected to more than double from 2.07 million to 5.44 million.
  • More people go blind from AMD than cataracts and glaucoma combined.

What is Vision Like With Macular Degeneration?

As macular degeneration develops, a general haziness impairs your central vision, eventually leading to the formation of blind spots at the center of your visual field. These blind spots might appear as grey blurs, blocking you from seeing what’s on the other side.

Dry and Wet Macular Degeneration

A typical case of macular degeneration is considered dry macular degeneration. However, there is another type known as wet macular degeneration.

Wet macular degeneration is the same chronic eye disease as regular AMD, however, the loss of vision is caused by swelling from leaking blood vessels that affect the macula. If caught early, treatment may help reduce the extent of vision loss and may even improve vision for some.
